You learn to love yourself. Bikram YogaBikram Yoga is a series of 26 postures and two breathing exercises, performed in a heated room. Each class follows the same structure, and runs ninety minutes long. The class is designed to be accessible to any person, from any background, with any physical concern, and at any fitness level. With the help of leading scientists and doctors, Bikram Choudhury developed the series in accordance with the teachings of his guru Bishnu Ghosh, and with the philosophies of traditional Hatha Yoga. Each posture leads to the next, addressing every muscle, joint, gland, organ, and system until the whole body is worked, “from bones to skin, fingertips to toes.” The results are an increase in overall health, rehabilitation of injuries and chronic conditions, stress reduction, pain relief, and improved performance both mentally and physically. “Ninety percent mental, ten percent physical.” Because it is challenging, the class works the mind as well as the body, developing the mental aspects of faith, self-control, determination, concentration, and patience. As students learn to use their breath and their mental discipline with the postures, they advance within the series. As the body and mind respond to a dedicated practice, the challenges of the class change and grow deeper.
